Before you bathe
Avant le bain
How to use an onsen properly.
Comment profiter d’un onsen correctement.
Wash before you enter. Sit at one of the showers and wash and rinse thoroughly. The bath is for soaking in, never for cleaning in — everyone shares the same water.
No swimwear. Bathing is done without clothing, in gender-separated baths. The small towel is for modesty on the way in and for washing — it never goes into the water. Rest it on the side or on your head.
Tie long hair up so it does not touch the water, and keep the bath quiet — no swimming, diving or splashing. The stillness is the point.
Go gently. The water is hot. Enter slowly, come out before you feel light-headed, and drink water before and after. Avoid bathing on a full stomach or after alcohol.
Allez-y doucement.
Tattoos. Policies differ between bathhouses and are stricter than most visitors expect. Your guide confirms the exact rule for the onsen you choose before the day, so nobody is turned away at the door.
Tatouages.
